Originally known as ‘Ajayameru’, meaning invincible hills, Ajmer is an early medieval township that rose to popularity and fame in later medieval times. With the Aravalli mountain ranges surrounding the city standing gaurd, this city contains many forts. Among them, the Taragarh fort is one of the oldest forts of India that has defended the attacks of many foreign invaders. Ajmer houses some rare North Indian style architecture belonging to Jain, Hindu structures that has survived despite barbaric attempts of destruction. Not too far away from Ajmer is the Pushkar Lake, a Vedic pilgrim destination where the natural water body surfacing from below, mirrors the sky, creating a perfect place for pensive self-reflection.
