Do you have kids? Has your toddler ever drawn something and presented it proudly to you?
At that time, have you ever encouraged the kid to explain the drawing?
I have!
Somehow I am much liked by kids of various age groups, and they all try to impress me with their drawings. And so, I have had many kids presenting me with their creations. After thanking them for their precious gift, I usually also spend a few minutes asking them to explain their creation. What comes out after thrills me! Behind those scribblings will be an entire story that travels farther in Space than the recently launched James Web. With just a few lines scribbled on the paper, their explanation will be literally out of the world. Their innocence is so pure that I cannot drift my imagination wild and boundaryless, allowing myself to get lost in the vastness of Space.
The Essence of Originality
The reason why I am talking about this is: In case you don’t know what is “original” then, just simply remember that a kid’s scribbling is the best example of it. In the present times of social media, I often feel that originality and common sense have become a rare thing. And what is even more disappointing for me as an artist is – when I come across some really intelligent people holding high positions in corporations and society but are unable to differentiate ‘what is original’ from ‘what is mediocrity’. In the event of this inability to differentiate mediocrity from originality, excellence in innovations suffers. Sadly, it is nobody’s fault also!
The Missing Art of Appreciation in Education
The educational systems the world over are flawed; neglecting to teach appreciation for art in all professional courses. Nobody realizes that in keeping art separated from other educational streams, the values (that are beyond capital gains) like ‘resting’, ‘knowing’, ‘seeing’, ‘learning’, and ‘observing’ are measures to be mastered for artistic excellence. And also the same measures for performing acts of justice and goodness in society. Without having a grasp over these basic parameters in the art of living, (irrespective of the social background and economic stature) everyone in the society seems to be running so fast. Without knowing what they are running for or towards.
The Role of Jvala’s Cultural Tour
In fact, Jvala’s travel paths are curated experientially for this very reason. Efforts are being made to throw light and increase awareness among “professionals and elites” on the parameters that help measure excellence. In knowing the artistic excellence of a generation that has created imprints in Space freeing themselves from the bondages of Time. We can also free ourselves from certain of our own illusions and conditionings. The knowledge gained to appreciate a work of art or an artistic journey to excellence will serve as meaningful experiences that will help us reinvent ourselves, keeping us fresh for life.
Three Experiential Travel Paths
This knowledge is hence divided into three Cultural experience travel paths so that the abstractions in art don’t weigh heavy for any uninitiated, and the learning can be done leisurely and pleasurably. Hence, each cultural destination of Jvala addresses a parameter of art and helps a travel enthusiast acquire taste over a series of slow travels. Now, without much ado, let’s go to a favorite destination and historical period of mine, Thanjavur: the seat of the cultural renaissance between the 7th and 17th Centuries.
